Program Overview

The REU Site Intersection of Linguistics, Language and Culture Program recruits talented undergraduate students residing in the NY area from (but not limited to) historically disadvantaged groups to partake in a part-time year-long program to engage in research on language and participate in workshops promoting diverse science and preparing for graduate school.

Through funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the US Department of Defense Scientific Research (AFSOR) program, 18 students will be selected to engage in a year-long research experience in speech-language-communication-hearing sciences that will include:

A.  Establishing a community of scholars by attending academic presentations in your interest area and writing about your work in a program-internal blog

B.  Conducting a research project with the help of a Research Mentor (a professor from a local university)

C.  Training in research ethics in order to conduct research involving the participation of human subjects

D. Participation in workshops on preparing for and applying to graduate school (covering topics such as: taking the GRE, selecting a graduate program, and compiling a successful application)

E.  Organizing the annual ILLC summer conference for the NSF REU site participants and community partners

F.    Presenting research project and findings at the ILLC conference

The program runs from August 2022 to June 2023. Fellows will dedicate 6-8 hours a week for 12 weeks of both the Fall 22 and Spring 23 semesters, as well as attending two 1-week summer workshops in August 2022 and June 2023.

REU Student Fellows are awarded a stipend of $5,200 for participation in the program to compensate for their work.
